Microsoft to release version of Windows 7 next week

Microsoft Corp said on Friday a version of its long awaited Windows 7 operating system will be made available from next week. The version, known as a ‘release candidate’, or RC, essentially means the world’s largest software company is in the final stages of completing the operating system, the successor to the unpopular Windows Vista.

Microsoft said the RC will be available for download by program developers and IT professionals subscribing to the MSDN and TechNet networks on April 30 and available more broadly on May 5.

The company has still not said when the finished version would begin to be installed on PCs or available to buy in shops, but the company’s chief financial officer said on Thursday it could be as early as July. That would allow Microsoft to capitalize on back-to-school sales and set it up for a strong holiday shopping season.

Microsoft’s operating systems, installed on the vast majority of the world’s PCs, are still the backbone of the company, providing more than half of its $4.4 billion profit last quarter. Vista, launched to the public in 2007, was incompatible with some low-power machines and perceived by many to be too complicated. Rival Apple Inc ridiculed Microsoft’s problems with the system in a series of popular TV ads. Windows 7, which has been getting good reviews in limited public tests over the last few months, is much cleaner looking and features an array of new touch-screen functions. Microsoft says it will also interact better with digital cameras and music players.

Win 7 changes coming in the next build

Windows 7 testers wanted more feedback from Microsoft. It looks like they’re getting it.

In a February 26 post to the Engineering Windows 7 blog, Microsoft itemized some of the changes that it is making to Windows 7 that will be part of the Release Candidate (RC) test build that is widely expected in April.

From the blog post introduction by Windows chief Steven Sinofsky:

“(W)e want to start posting on the feedback and the engineering actions we’ve taken in responding to the feedback. We won’t be able to cover all the changes (as we’re still busy making them), but for today we wanted to start with a sampling of some of the more visible changes.”

The post goes on to detail some of the Windows 7 changes Microsoft is making in response to tester feedback — in the task bar, Media Player, networking, touch, the Windows Explorer and overall performance. Given that Windows 7 was deemed “feature-complete” as of the public beta that Microsoft released in January, the changes coming between then and the Release Candidate are largely cosmetic. (At least it seems that way to me….)

A number of Windows 7 testers have complained recently that Microsoft was not sharing enough information about changes it planned to make in response to their feedback.

Windows SuperSite’s Paul Thurrott questioned in a post yesterday whether Microsoft had already locked down Windows 7’s feature set before the majority of technical and public beta testers ever got to see a first release of the product. I’ve wondered the same.

Windows 7 RC1 (Release Candidate 1) Build 7048 Expected By End of February

Last week we had reported about windows 7 build 7032 screenshots from our trusted source winfuture.de. Windows 7 Build 7048 May Be RC (RC1).

We all are still speculating the probable date of windows 7 final release, but its for sure that its going to be earlier as it has been learned from internal source of Microsoft that windows 7 is stepped into release candidate.

Winfuture.de reported today that Windows 7 RC 1 can be expected by end of February. As per rumors MSDN/TechNet subscribers along with the other private beta testers, would receive the RC build after 27th February.

As per Winfuture.de selected pool of Microsoft testers have received latest Windows 7 builds 6.1.7048.winmain_win7rc1.090211-1625. The build number definitely suggest that its under RC branch but its unlikely that this build can be actual Windows 7 RC 1.

Unlike Windows 7 Beta build 7000 was released as public beta, Windows 7 RC 1 may not be available for public.

Well its still two more weeks go to uncover all speculations and ramous about windows 7 first Release Candidate.

Windows 7 build 7022 leaks

Microsoft are currently working hard towards the Release Candidate of Windows 7. Currently the only official build available to testers and the general public is build 7000 but we have learned that 7022 has leaked to the internet today. According to a Russian torrent site it was leaked by “ friendly” Microsoft Ukraine individuals. It’s not likely that the build contains any of the UAC changes Microsoft has recently promised. The build is Build 7022.winmain.090115-1850 which indicates it was built nearly a month ago. Some Microsoft employees have twittered recently that they were “ installing build 7034″ so the company is clearly pushing ahead with the builds ready for the upcoming Release Candidate.

The installation seemed much faster, maybe 20 minutes tops. Some of the things noticed during the installation was:

* It no longer asks you to join a HomeGroup during the setup.

* After the second reboot during install, when the bootloader came up there were three options: Windows 7 (this would finish the install), Windows 7 Rollback (Not sure what this does. Possibly rolls back all changed the installer made? New, did not show in 7000), .

* The new sidebar color that was shown in previous screenshots.

* New Paint, as we saw in previous screenshots.

* HomeGroup gets a new icon.

* IE8 updated to RC1

* Faster search in startmenu, instant.

* General higher stability in OS

* New animations when moving between things in Windows Explorer

* Desktop Gadget Gallery is the new name for Sidebar. It gets a new icon!

Windows Installer 4.5 for Vista SP2, 5.0 for Windows 7

In June 2008, Microsoft released Windows Installer 4.5 on the Microsoft Download Center for XP SP2+, Server 2003 SP1+, Vista, and Server 2008.

Now, with yesterday’s release of the SP2 RC-Escrow build, it has been confirmed that the new version will also be bundled with the second service pack for Vista and Server 2008. Currently, Microsoft lists 656 individual hotfixes in SP2, and this number is unlikely to change given how far into development the company is.

If Microsoft decides to release another service pack for XP or Server 2003, Windows Installer 4.5 will likely be bundled there as well. That is, unless Microsoft deems that Windows Installer 5.0 should also be in previous versions of Windows.

Windows Installer 5.0 is right now only available in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, which are both in beta. Therefore it’s not surprising that version 5.0 still has bugs that are being worked out. That said, Microsoft already has a preliminary document on MSDN entitled What’s New in Windows Installer 5.0 that Windows developers might want to give a once-over. Get the Old Thin Taskbar in Windows 7

Windows 7 contains new iconized taskbar buttons which only show program icons. Its a new feature in Windows 7 and looks nice. But a few people might find it difficult to use.

So here is a simple step-by-step tutorial to enable the old thin taskbar buttons with text in Windows 7:

1. Right-click on Taskbar and select Properties.

2. You’ll see “ Taskbar buttons” option will be set to “ Always combine, hide labels“ . Change it to either “ Combine when taskbar is full” or “ Never combine“ .

“ Combine when taskbar is full” option will group same program buttons in taskbar like Windows XP and Vista. “ Never combine” option will disable grouping.

3. Apply it and you’ll get the taskbar buttons with program text.

4. If you also want to get the thin taskbar like previous Windows versions, then also enable “ Use small icons” option.

5. And now you’ll enjoy the same old thin taskbar with program text:

Display Icons And Text In The Windows 7 Taskbar

The Windows 7 taskbar has seen a major overhaul. It looks and behaves different than the taskbars on previous versions of the Windows operating system. One of those changes is the icon only display in the Windows 7 taskbar.

All open programs will be shown with their icons only. Some users might prefer the old way of displaying items in the Windows taskbar instead.

It is actually possible to change the display of the Windows 7 Taskbar items so that they display both icons and text instead.

To do that right-click empty space in the Windows 7 Taskbar and select Properties from the options. Locate the Taskbar Buttons entry and change the dropdown menu on the right from Always Combine, hide labels to Never Combine and press OK to apply the changes.

From then on icons and text will be displayed in the Windows 7 Taskbar.

A Close Look At The New Windows 7 Taskbar

Microsoft introduced some fundamental design changes in the Windows 7 presentation today. This article will take a closer look at what Microsoft has shown. One of the most talked new features is the new Windows 7 Taskbar. We already talked about the increase in size but Microsoft has revealed some interesting information about the taskbar today. If you look at a picture of the Windows 7 Taskbar you notice that it is displaying icons and no names which is a different approach than before. Each icon still represents an application, file or folder that has been opened. It is possible to change the order of each icon in the taskbar which was one of the most requested features for it. It is even possible to pin applications at a certain position in the taskbar so that they will always be available in the same spot.

The screenshot above is a closeup of the Windows 7 Taskbar as it is implemented in the latest build. Previews of each item of the taskbar are now available by simply hoovering over one. Even more interesting is the ability to display not only the current active window of the application but also other open tabs of it. An Internet Explorer preview would for instance display the open tabs of the browser while a Word preview all open documents. It is likely that there will be a maximum of preview windows that can be displayed at a time. The user can load a window or application by simply moving the mouse over the preview icon. It should be noted that it is now possible to place programs permanently into the Windows Taskbar which was was only possible in the Quick Launch area in previous Windows versions. Open applications and folders are visualized by a border which makes it easy to distinguish between open and closed programs. Multiple open windows will be visualized by icon stacks. The size of the taskbar icons can be altered to provide space for more icons or less but bigger ones.

A right-click on an icon in the Windows 7 Taskbar will open so called Jump Lists. This is another interesting new feature. Jump Lists provide access to the last used files, documents or website history. It can also contain the most common tasks like playing all music tracks or resuming a playlist. A user could use it to open an Excel spreadsheet that he opened previously to continue working on it.

The Windows 7 System Tray has been redesigned as well. A design focus was to design it in a way that it would add less interruption to the user’s workflow. After installation only four icons are displayed in the Windows 7 System Tray: Volume, Power, Network and Action Center. Icons of applications that install a system tray icon will be hidden by default and notifications suppressed which obviously can be changed in the options. Hidden meaning that they can be accessed from the Caret. A right-click provides access to the Customize Notification Icons panel. The user can change the status of any icon in the system tray in the options there.

Date and time can still be configured after the users liking. Versions with both the time and date in two rows and only the time are possible. The far right contains a new feature called Peek. If the user moves the mouse over that panel all open windows become transparent making the desktop shine through. A click on it will show the desktop. Aero Peek comes also in effect when hoovering the mouse over preview windows of the Windows 7 Taskbar. If the user moves the mouse over a preview window all other open windows will turn to glass which means that only the window the user is looking at will come to his attention.
